How to choose a cold-process soap

Start with how you will use the soap and whether you want added fragrance. Then compare the ingredients and bar size. The superfat percentage describes the formula; it is not a quality score.

A finished soap ready for use: its formula and intended use matter more than its colour.

Start with your everyday routine

A bar beside the bathroom basin, a larger soap for the shower and a compact bar for travelling serve slightly different purposes. Before choosing a colour, think about where you will use your soap, how comfortable it will be to hold and where you can leave it to dry. These practical details can matter more than choosing the most elaborate formula.

“Cold-process” describes how a soap is made. It does not tell you whether a particular bar contains fragrance or which size suits your routine. Our cold-process soap article, available in French explains the manufacturing method. This guide focuses on choosing a finished soap rather than making one.

Three points to compare
  1. How you will use it
  2. Formula and INCI list
  3. A suitable format

Check the fragrance and ingredients

If you prefer products without added fragrance, Le Neutre contains no added perfume, colouring or essential oil. Fragrance-free does not necessarily mean completely odourless: the ingredients themselves can have a natural scent. For a scented option, Le Bleu includes petitgrain bigarade essential oil.

Read the ingredient list for the exact product you are considering, particularly if you already know that you need to avoid an ingredient. Natural origin and organic certification do not mean that every formula will suit every person. A familiar collection name is not a substitute for checking the individual bar.

Superfat refers to the fats that the recipe is designed to leave unconverted into soap. The difference between 10% and 13% cannot, on its own, predict how your skin will feel after washing. The whole formula and the way you use and rinse the soap also matter. Choose the features you want rather than automatically selecting the highest percentage.

Build in simple washing and drying habits

Lather the soap between wet hands, spread the lather over the area you want to wash and rinse thoroughly. Start with a small amount and adjust as needed. You do not need to scrub hard to make lather. Afterwards, place the bar on a draining soap dish, away from the shower spray, so it can dry between uses.

Follow the directions on the packaging and avoid contact with the eyes. Stop using a product if it causes discomfort. A different fragrance or a higher superfat percentage is not a guarantee that the next formula will suit you.

Find the bar that fits

Explore Les Pavés de Paris for 150 g bars, or look at Forêt sacrée for a 90 g option. The cold-process soap collection brings the product pages together. Compare the actual ingredients, size and directions on each page before choosing, and plan a dry place for the bar as part of your routine.
