Our ingredients

This glossary explains the ingredients used in our natural cosmetics. Ingredients marked with an asterisk are fragrance allergens that must be named in an INCI ingredient list when their concentration exceeds the applicable threshold. Colourants, including those of natural origin, are identified by CI followed by five digits.

For soap, the ingredient list describes the finished product after saponification. Names such as Sodium cocoate or Sodium olivate identify the soap salts formed when the corresponding oil reacts with sodium hydroxide. Check each product's current ingredient list for its exact formula.

Corn starch (INCI: Zea mays starch)

Organic corn starch is used to soften and exfoliate the skin, helping remove dead skin cells and leave a smooth feel. It is used in our orange-blossom-scented bath salts. It is obtained by mixing, washing and drying. Origin: Austria.

White clay (INCI: Kaolin)

Kaolin is a naturally occurring hydrated aluminium silicate in the clay family. It is used in deodorants to absorb moisture. It is obtained by kaolinisation, refining and grinding. Mineral source: granite. Origin: United Kingdom.

Golden yellow clay (INCI: Kaolin)

This naturally occurring mineral clay is used to give our soaps an orange colour. Also called yellow clay, it is obtained by micronisation. Origin: Brazil.

Benzyl benzoate* (INCI: Benzyl Benzoate)

Benzyl benzoate occurs naturally in ylang-ylang essential oil used in our cold-process soaps. It contributes a very light balsamic scent. It occurs naturally in certain essential oils.

Saponified shea butter (INCI: Sodium shea butterate)

This is the result of the saponification reaction between organic shea butter and sodium hydroxide, also called the sodium salts of shea butter fatty acids. Our shea butter is mechanically pressed from shea kernels and sourced through fair trade. It is then refined to give it a neutral scent. Saponified shea butter helps make our soaps firm. Plant part: kernel. Origin: Burkina Faso.

Sodium bicarbonate (INCI: Sodium bicarbonate)

Sodium bicarbonate, also called sodium hydrogen carbonate or baking soda (NaHCO3), is a white crystalline powder used in deodorants. It helps absorb moisture and reduce odour by controlling bacterial growth. It is made from mineral ingredients by carbonating a sodium carbonate solution with carbon dioxide.

Bisabolol (INCI: Bisabolol)

Bisabolol, also known as levomenol, is obtained by distilling candeia wood essential oil. It is a lightly scented, oily liquid used as a skin-soothing ingredient. Origin: Brazil.

Magnesium carbonate (INCI: Magnesium carbonate hydroxide)

Magnesium carbonate (MgCO3) is a white solid mineral ingredient obtained from Dead Sea salts. It absorbs moisture to leave skin feeling smooth and dry. The listed production method adds CO2 to magnesium hydroxide. Origin: Israel/Jordan.

CBD (INCI: Cannabidiol)

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a molecule naturally found in cannabis. It is a lipophilic cannabinoid, meaning it has an affinity with fats, so it is commonly incorporated into oil-containing formulas. It is used in some of our cosmetics. Extraction method: supercritical CO2. Origin: United States.

Microcrystalline cellulose (INCI: Microcrystalline Cellulose)

Microcrystalline cellulose is made from plant fibre. This absorbent powder also helps give our deodorants a soft feel. Its source material is hardwood, including beech, and softwood, including spruce, from European and American forests. Origin: plant-derived.

Triethyl citrate (INCI: Triethyl Citrate)

Triethyl citrate is frequently used in deodorants as an alternative to aluminium salts. It inhibits the enzymatic breakdown of components of perspiration, helping reduce body odour. It is made by esterifying citric acid with ethanol. Source materials include corn glucose syrup, molasses, sugar beet or sugar cane. Origin: synthesised from plant-derived materials.

Citral* (INCI: Citral)

Citral occurs naturally in essential oils used to fragrance our soaps, including orange and lemon oils. It contributes a fresh, zesty scent. It occurs naturally in certain essential oils.

Citronellol* (INCI: Citronellol)

Citronellol occurs naturally in geranium essential oil used to fragrance our cold-process soaps, and also in rose and citronella essential oils. It contributes a floral note. It occurs naturally in certain essential oils.

Coumarin (INCI: Coumarin)

Coumarin occurs naturally in natural-origin fragrances and certain essential oils. It contributes a vanilla-like scent. It is a fragrance allergen listed under European cosmetic regulations and must appear in the INCI list above the applicable concentration threshold.

Water (INCI: Aqua)

Demineralised water is used to dilute the sodium hydroxide needed for saponification, producing a solution. It is obtained by filtration. Origin: France.

Ethanol (INCI: Alcohol)

Ethanol, also called alcohol or denatured alcohol, is used in cosmetics as a preservative and antibacterial ingredient. In hydroalcoholic solutions it acts as a disinfectant against bacteria, microbes and other microorganisms. It is obtained by fermentation and distillation from sugar beet or sugar cane.

Eugenol* (INCI: Eugenol)

Eugenol occurs naturally in essential oils used to fragrance our soaps, particularly clove oil. It is used in making vanillin and as a fragrance ingredient in cosmetics. It occurs naturally in certain essential oils.

Farnesol* (INCI: Farnesol)

Geraniol* (INCI: Geraniol)

Geraniol occurs naturally in geranium and bergamot mint essential oils used in our cold-process soaps, as well as in palmarosa and rose essential oils. It contributes a light rose note. It occurs naturally in certain essential oils.

Glycerin (INCI: Glycerin)

Plant-derived glycerin, also called glycerol, forms naturally during saponification as a coproduct of soapmaking. It is a moisturising ingredient that helps maintain the skin's hydrolipidic film.

Organic poppy seeds are used in our soaps as a natural exfoliant. Plant part: seeds. Origin: Turkey.

Sweet almond oil (INCI: Prunus amygdalus dulcis oil)

Organic virgin sweet almond oil is cold-pressed directly from almond seeds. It is rich in omega-9 fatty acids and is used to nourish, soften and comfort dry skin. Origin: Spain.

Arnica oil (INCI: Arnica Montana Flower Extract)

Arnica is a perennial plant from mountainous regions. Arnica oil, also called an oily extract of Arnica montana flowers, is made by cold-macerating the flowers in sunflower oil. It is used in our Deep Tissue massage oil. Origin: France.

Avocado oil (INCI: Persea gratissima oil)

Organic virgin avocado oil is rich in vitamins A, D and E. It is used for its emollient and moisturising properties to nourish and soften the skin. It is made from the fruit pulp by cold pressing followed by centrifugation. Origin: Spain.

Olive oil (INCI: Olea europaea fruit oil)

Organic olive oil is extracted directly from the fruit by mechanical means. We use it as a superfatting oil in cold-process soap for its nourishing, softening and protective cosmetic properties. Origin: Spain, Tunisia, Italy or Greece.

Saponified olive oil (INCI: Sodium olivate)

This is the product of the saponification reaction between organic olive oil and sodium hydroxide, also called sodium olivate or sodium salts of olive oil fatty acids. It contributes to the mild feel of our cold-process soaps. Plant part: fruit. Origin: Spain, Tunisia, Italy or Greece.

Calendula oil (INCI: Calendula Officinalis Flower)

Calendula, or marigold, is a herbaceous plant with yellow or orange-yellow flowers. Calendula oil is an oily extract of the flowers, used for soothing cosmetic care of dry and delicate skin. Origin: France.

Carrot oil (INCI: Daucus carota sativa root extract)

This oily extract is made from cut carrot roots and contains beta-carotene, lutein and vitamin A. It is used in cosmetic care intended to give skin a brighter appearance. Origin: France.

Hemp seed oil (INCI: Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil)

This oil is extracted from the seeds of Cannabis sativa by cold pressing. It contains vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids and is used to nourish and soften the skin. Also called hemp oil or Cannabis sativa seed oil. Origin: France.

Coconut oil (INCI: Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil)

Coconut oil is a plant oil made from the coconut's endosperm, or flesh. It is cold-pressed from dried pulp. It gives our deodorants structure and a melting texture, and helps nourish and soften the skin. Origin: Philippines.

Saponified coconut oil (INCI: Sodium cocoate)

This is the product of the saponification reaction between organic coconut or copra oil and sodium hydroxide. Also called sodium cocoate or sodium salts of coconut fatty acids, it gives our soaps firmness and helps them lather. Plant part: dried pulp. Origin: Philippines.

Sesame seed oil (INCI: Sesamum indicum seed oil)

Jojoba oil (INCI: Simmondsia chinensis seed oil)

Organic jojoba oil, also called jojoba wax, is a liquid wax cold-pressed from jojoba seeds. Its composition resembles that of human sebum. It is used for skin and hair care for its moisturising, softening feel. Origin: Peru.

Apricot kernel oil (INCI: Prunus armeniaca kernel oil)

Organic apricot kernel oil is cold-pressed directly from the fruit kernels. Rich in unsaturated fatty acids, it has an emollient, nourishing feel and helps maintain the skin's hydrolipidic film. It leaves skin supple. Origin: Turkey or Pakistan.

Sunflower oil (INCI: Heliantus annuus seed oil)

Organic sunflower seed oil is obtained by cold pressing the seeds. We use it as a superfatting oil to make our soaps feel milder. Rich in linoleic acid, it helps protect the skin from dryness. Origin: Europe.

Tea tree essential oil (INCI: Melaleuca alternifolia leaf oil)

Organic tea tree essential oil is obtained by low-pressure steam distillation of the leaves. It is used as an ingredient in cosmetic formulas. Origin: South Africa.

Pink pepper essential oil (INCI: Schinus molle oil)

Organic pink pepper essential oil comes from Schinus molle, also called the wild pepper tree. It is obtained by distillation and used to fragrance our soaps. Origin: Ecuador or Madagascar.

Ho wood essential oil (INCI: Cinnamomum camphora leaf oil)

Ho wood essential oil, also known as shiu wood oil, comes from Cinnamomum camphora var. linaloolifera Y.Fujita. It is obtained by distilling camphor-tree leaves and is used for its aromatic qualities. Origin: China.

Lemon essential oil (INCI: Citrus limon peel oil)

Organic lemon essential oil comes from Citrus limon (L.) Burman F. It is cold-pressed from the fruit peel and used in our soaps for its fresh, lively scent. Origin: Spain.

Egyptian geranium essential oil (INCI: Pelargonium graveolens flower oil)

This essential oil comes from Pelargonium graveolens. It is obtained by steam distillation of the herbaceous parts of the plant and is used in our soaps for its floral scent. Origin: Egypt.

Lavandin super essential oil (INCI: Lavandula hybrida oil)

Organic lavandin super essential oil is obtained by low-pressure steam distillation of the flowering tops. It is used as an aromatic ingredient in cosmetics. Origin: France.

Bergamot mint essential oil (INCI: Mentha citrata herb oil)

Bergamot mint essential oil, also called lemon mint oil, comes from Mentha x citrata Ehrh. It is obtained by steam distillation of the aerial parts of the plant and gives our cold-process soaps a fresh, citrus-like scent. Origin: India.

Peppermint essential oil (INCI: Mentha piperita oil)

Organic peppermint essential oil is obtained by low-pressure steam distillation of the flowering aerial parts. It is used in cosmetics for its fresh, minty scent. Origin: India.

Sweet orange essential oil (INCI: Citrus aurantium dulcis oil)

Organic sweet orange essential oil comes from Citrus aurantium dulcis. It is cold-pressed from the fruit peel and gives our products their sweet, fruity scent. Origin: Mexico.

Wintergreen leaf essential oil (INCI: Gaultheria procumbens leaf oil)

Wintergreen essential oil comes from Gaultheria procumbens leaves and is rich in methyl salicylate. It is commonly used in formulas intended for sports massage. Production method: distillation. Origin: plant-derived.

Petitgrain bitter orange essential oil (INCI: Citrus aurantium amara leaf/twig oil)

Organic petitgrain essential oil is also called bitter orange leaf and twig oil and comes from Citrus × aurantium L. ssp amara. It is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves and twigs and gives our soaps a fresh, floral citrus scent. Origin: Paraguay.

Organic ravintsara essential oil is obtained by low-pressure steam distillation of the leaves. Origin: Madagascar.

Cineole rosemary essential oil (INCI: Rosmarinus officinalis leaf oil)

Organic cineole rosemary essential oil is obtained by low-pressure steam distillation of the twigs and leafy tops. It is used as an ingredient in cosmetics. Origin: Tunisia.

Magnesium hydroxide (INCI: Magnesium Hydroxide)

Magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) is a white solid ingredient obtained from Dead Sea salts. It is used in deodorants to absorb moisture and help reduce odour by controlling bacterial growth. The listed production process is calcination and hydration of magnesium chloride. Origin: inorganic.

Menthyl lactate (INCI: Menthyl Lactate)

Menthyl lactate is a menthol derivative combining menthol and lactic acid. It gives a gentle, lasting cooling sensation on the skin. It is synthesised from natural menthol and natural lactic acid. Origin: China.

Limonene* (INCI: Limonene)

Limonene occurs naturally in orange and lemon essential oils used in several of our cold-process soaps. It gives the soaps their citrus note. It occurs naturally in certain essential oils.
