How to use a rinse-off cleansing oil

Apply the oil to dry skin, massage gently, add a little water to turn it milky, then rinse thoroughly. Emulsifying is the step that sets this formula apart from a plain plant oil.

Understand why this oil rinses away

Atelier Populaire cleansing oil includes sunflower, jojoba and sesame oils. It also contains Polyglyceryl-4 oleate, an emulsifier that allows the oily texture to turn milky when you add water. That change is part of the cleansing routine: this is not simply an oil you apply and leave on the skin.

A plain plant oil does not necessarily behave in the same way when mixed with water. To follow the steps in this guide, use a cleansing product specifically designed to emulsify and rinse off. The formula and its directions tell you more than the word “oil” alone.

Makeup-removal steps
  1. Massage gently
  2. Add a little water
  3. Rinse

Step one: start on dry skin

With clean, dry hands, take a small amount and spread it over a dry face, avoiding the eyes, lips and mucous membranes. Gently massage the areas where you want to remove makeup. You do not need to press hard or repeatedly rub the same patch of skin to carry out this routine.

Adjust the amount to the area you are cleansing. Starting with too much product can mean spending more time on the rinse. It is easier to add a little gradually than to begin with a generous dose before you know what you need. Keep water away from the bottle opening while using it.

Step two: add a little water

Lightly wet your hands and continue the gentle massage. The oil takes on a milky appearance as it mixes with the water. Spread this emulsion over the areas you have already massaged. Treat it as a separate step between applying the oil to dry skin and completing the final rinse.

Going straight from a large amount of oil to a very quick rinse can make it harder to distribute the water evenly. Take a moment to work through the texture with damp hands instead. You are looking for a milky emulsion, not the foam you would expect from soap, so there is no need to keep rubbing in search of lather.

Step three: rinse thoroughly

Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, then pat your face dry with a clean towel. Your hands are enough for the steps described here; cotton pads are not essential. Check that the product has rinsed away from the areas you massaged, including near the hairline, while keeping clear of the eyes.

If you notice a remaining film, review the amount of oil, the emulsifying step and the rinse next time. Automatically adding several more cleansing products is not part of the instructions for this formula. Keep the routine manageable and pay attention to how comfortable your skin feels afterwards.

Follow the application precautions

The brand's source specifies external use, avoiding the eyes, lips and mucous membranes, and states that this product is not suitable for children. Keep it out of their reach. Rinse thoroughly if accidental eye contact occurs, and stop using the product if it causes discomfort.
