Your everyday impact
How many bottles might you avoid with solid soap?
For showers and handwashing, estimate how many shower gel and liquid soap bottles you might replace. We provide starting figures that you can adjust.

Your switch to solid soap
Estimate. Our sources and method →
From shower gel to solid soap
Fewer bottles in the bathroom
Solid soap can replace shower gel in the shower and liquid soap at handwashing points. The estimate separates these uses: showers depend on the number of people; handwashing depends on the number of sinks or basins where you use soap.
The proposed quantities are starting assumptions. Adjust them to your habits to estimate bottles replaced, plastic avoided and the number of 100 g soap bars needed. The five-year projection simply extends your annual estimate.

Cold-process soap made in Paris
Cold-process soapmaking: ingredients and craft
Cold-process saponification transforms oils and lye into soap. At Atelier Populaire, our superfatted soaps are made, cut and stamped by hand in our Paris 19th workshop.
In an INCI list, names beginning with “sodium” describe the result of this reaction. This technical wording describes how the soap is made; on its own, it does not establish an ingredient's origin.
Le Bleu has a 10% superfat level. That figure applies to this soap; each formula has its own characteristics, shown on its product page.

Understanding organic cosmetics
Certification and our formulation choices
We use raw materials of plant or mineral origin, choosing organic and fair-trade options where possible. Our cosmetics are vegan and palm-oil-free; we do not use synthetic, petrochemical or animal-derived ingredients.
Place of manufacture is another useful marker. All our cosmetics are made in Paris. Les Pavés de Paris, the Voyage collection and the CBD & organic hemp oil range also carry the City of Paris “Made in Paris” label.

How many bottles can one soap bar replace?
We use 2.5 bottles of 250 mL shower gel per 100 g soap bar, within a published range of two to three bottles. You can adjust this assumption. Annual soap needs for showers are rounded up to the next whole bar.
Why count handwashing points?
Liquid soap is used near kitchen sinks, basins and toilets. We estimate four 300 mL bottles and two 100 g solid soaps per handwashing point each year, regardless of household size. You can adjust both values.
Does solid soap use less hot water?
A comparison per wash reports about 30% more hot water with solid soap. This drawback is also part of its environmental footprint.
Are our cosmetics certified organic?
Atelier Populaire cosmetics are certified by Ecocert to COSMOS and carry the Cosmébio label. They are also vegan and palm-oil-free.

Your impact · calculation assumptions
Our sources and method
The assumptions used by Atelier Populaire, their sources and how they are combined.
How your estimate is calculated
- Shower: number of people × shower gel bottles per person per year. The number of 100 g soaps needed is this result divided by the number of bottles replaced by one soap, rounded up.
- Hands: number of handwashing points × liquid soap bottles per point per year. The number of 100 g soaps needed is the number of points × soaps per point per year, rounded up if your adjustment gives a fraction. Household size does not enter this calculation.
- Plastic: total bottles for the selected uses × plastic weight per bottle. Without measured weights, 300 mL bottles are treated like 250 mL bottles. Weight is shown in grams, then kilograms from 1,000 g.
- Projection: the “Project over five years” option multiplies annual results by five, including soap needs already rounded to whole bars. Unselected uses are excluded.
- Home-page mini calculator: number of people × seven shower gel bottles per year. It counts showers only, using the default assumption.
Default example: Two people and two handwashing points: 14 + 8 = 22 bottles, or 484 g of plastic; 6 + 4 = 10 bars of 100 g soap per year.
Per wash, a liquid soap is reported to emit around 25% more CO₂ than a solid soap. This comparison does not allow us to calculate kilograms of CO₂ avoided by your household.

Summary by Scientific American. Assumptions used: liquid soap's carbon footprint per wash around 25% higher; raw-material energy ×5 and packaging energy nearly ×20; 2.3 g of liquid versus 0.35 g of solid per handwash; around 30% more hot water for solid soap.
- ADEME, French shower gel use and packaging, cited by Planète Zéro Déchet and Savaé : six to eight 250 mL bottles per person per year, of which we use seven. The 22 g plastic weight per bottle is reported by Planète Zéro Déchet. The 16,000 tonnes of annual packaging covers both shower gel and shampoo and is not used in the calculation.
- Soap-to-bottle equivalence: Savonnerie du Frêne and Savaé, two to three 250 mL bottles per 100 g soap bar. We use 2.5.
