How to use whipped shea butter

Take a small amount, warm it between your hands and spread it over the area you want to use it on. The Neutre and shimmer formulas have different intended uses and precautions.

A whipped texture that needs only a little

Whipped shea butter is a cosmetic with a light, whipped-butter texture. Atelier Populaire formulas include shea butter, sweet almond oil and apricot kernel oil. The airy appearance does not mean you need to take a large scoop. Start with a small amount and see how far it spreads before adding more.

The French name, “chantilly”, refers to its whipped texture, but this is not food. Keep the pot in its labelled packaging and out of children's reach. Begin by deciding what you want from the product: a balm without added fragrance or a scented shimmer finish on the skin.

How to use a little at a time
  1. Take a small amount
  2. Warm between your hands
  3. Adjust for the area

For the body: take, warm and spread

Use clean, dry hands to take a small amount. Warm it between your palms, then spread it gently over clean skin. Try a limited area, such as your hands or legs, before adjusting the amount. Aim for an even application that feels comfortable rather than a thick layer sitting on the surface.

After a shower, dry your hands before reaching into the pot so that you do not introduce water. If the finish feels too rich, use less next time. Your preferred amount may change with the area you are applying it to; you do not need to use the same measured quantity every day.

For hair: follow the Neutre directions

The Neutre whipped shea butter product page includes use on hair lengths and ends. Warm a very small amount between your hands and smooth it onto the ends. Start sparingly to see how it looks and feels on your hair. An amount that works on thick lengths may be too much for fine hair.

For a pre-shampoo application, the product directions suggest leaving it on for 30 minutes before washing and rinsing. This hair routine applies to the Neutre formula described here. Do not automatically transfer the same instructions to another product, especially a shimmer version.

Choose between Neutre and shimmer

Neutre is made without added fragrance or essential oils, and its product page carries the COSMOS ORGANIC designation. Fruits rouges and Pêche abricot are scented shimmer versions. Apply small touches to build the luminous finish, following the directions for the areas where the particular product can be used.

The shimmer product pages state that these versions are not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women, babies or children. That difference matters more than the similar packaging or texture. Check the exact reference and its precautions, and do not assume that every item in a collection has the same certification.

Keep application and storage straightforward

Avoid the eyes and mucous membranes, and stop using the product if it causes discomfort. Close the pot after use and follow the storage conditions on the packaging. Do not add water, fragrance or essential oils to change the texture or scent of a finished formula.

Compare the options in the whipped shea butter collection. Our INCI ingredient-list article, available in French provides further help with ingredient names. Keep expectations cosmetic: a body balm is not a substitute for addressing a skin problem with an appropriate professional.
